NJ I-Bank Project of the Week: Jackson Township MUA Western Water Main Extension. Authority receives $5,894,983 in Water Bank loans. Estimated savings to ratepayers of $938,901.

The Jackson Township MUA (JTMUA) recently completed drinking water improvements that are being funded with approximately $5.9 million in loans from the NJ Water Bank, a joint low-rate funding program of the DEP and the NJ I-Bank. Including interest cost savings, total savings for this project is estimated to be $938,901 over the 30-year term of the loan or 16% of the total project cost. In addition, this project created an estimated 70 direct construction jobs. 

The project included the construction of approximately 31,050 linear feet of a 16-inch diameter water main extension between the original water system and the Six Flags Great Adventure (SFGA) water treatment plant. The water main extension was also equipped with 4.5-inch fire hydrant steamer nozzles. 

With these improvements, the JTMUA provided the northeast section of its water system and SFGA with back-up water supply. Residential properties, originally operating on well systems, benefitted from the provision of reliable and consistent service resulting in improved access to quality drinking water. The water service is regulated and subject to reporting and testing requirements in compliance with Federal and State standards to guarantee safe drinking water. Additional work included the installation of a booster pump station to maintain adequate water pressure downstream and helped improve or provide new fire protection to the project area.

Michael Reina, Mayor of Jackson Township, stressed the need for the project. “We’re dedicated to maintaining a clean and efficient water supply for the health of our community. This project provided improved water quality for all commercial and residential developments within the water main extension route and provided fire protection. The MUA strategically borrowed from the NJ Water Bank, not only enhancing the integrity of our service, but also contributing to the economic vitality of our township by passing the savings on to our rate payers.”
